Whilst teaching is an incredibly rewarding role, it’s well known for being stressful at times. As a teacher, you spend most of your time helping others but it’s just as important to prioritise your own mental health and wellbeing.
When you take care of yourself, you’re better equipped to support your pupils and create a positive learning environment. Remember: you can’t pour from an empty cup.
Here are our top tips to help you thrive both inside and outside the classroom:
Celebrate the Joys
Remind yourself why you chose teaching. Think back to your first day in the classroom, the smile on a pupil’s face when they grasp a new concept, or the pride you felt when your class aced a test. These moments matter, so celebrate them.
Prioritise Sleep
Sleep is one of the most important aspects of our day. Without enough rest, we’re less productive, less energetic, and often less positive. Waking up refreshed helps you approach the day with clarity and confidence.
Be Active
Movement is a powerful mood booster. Whether it’s a gym session or a walk, find what works for you. Physical activity releases endorphins and helps you feel more energised and resilient, which will positively impact your teaching.
Practice Mindfulness
Taking a few minutes each day to pause and breathe can help reduce stress and improve focus. Mindfulness doesn’t have to mean meditation, it could be journaling, stretching, or simply enjoying a quiet cup of tea. Small moments of calm can have a big impact.
Set Boundaries
Keep outside-of-work hours completely free from school-related tasks. No marking, no planning, no worrying about tomorrow’s lessons. Protect your personal time and give yourself permission to switch off. You deserve it.
Be Realistic
Avoid setting yourself up for disappointment by overloading your to-do list. If your goals for the day feel overwhelming, take a step back and prioritise. Adapting your plans isn’t a failure, it’s a strength.
Stay Connected
Teaching can sometimes feel isolating, especially in supply roles. Make time to connect with fellow educators, whether through online communities, local meetups, or informal chats in the staffroom. Sharing experiences can be both comforting and inspiring.
Reflect and Recharge
Supply work offers a unique opportunity to slow down, reflect, and grow. Use this time to explore different schools, refine your teaching style, and discover what truly works for you. Embrace the flexibility and make it work in your favour.
By looking after your own wellbeing, you’ll not only feel better, but you’ll also teach better. Your energy, enthusiasm, and positivity will naturally rub off on your pupils, creating a happier and more effective learning environment for everyone.
